Understanding the Co-Sleeper Options

When you set out in search of the best co-sleeper, you probably realized that manufacturers use a variety of different terms and names to describe this type of product.

It was a bit confusing when we started searching, but we quickly navigated our way through the names and made sense of all the different options out there.

Here are some of the different products you’ll encounter in the co-sleeper family.

  • On-Bed Sleeping Pad. First, you have the on-bed sleeping pad. It’s basically a pillow that is designed specifically for infants and rests on the top of your mattress. Baby should always sleep in between you and your partner or between yourself and another barrier if you’re the only one in the bed.

Many parents find these invaluable during the first few months; however, infants will outgrow them quickly.

Some have walls, and some are more like pillows (such as number 1).

  • Co-Sleeper Bassinet. Units that look more like a crib/playpen are co-sleeper bassinets.

These stand on their own with a base and they have four walls, one of which can fold up and down so you can easily access baby right from your bed.

The co-sleeper bassinet is designed to stand right next to your bed, but you should make sure that its maximum height is high enough to reach the top of your mattress. Otherwise, your baby will sit too low and reaching them won’t be as easy.

  • On-Bed Bassinet. The other type of model is a type of “travel bassinet” or what we call the “on-bed bassinet.”

The two examples of these on our list are numbers 5 and 10, and many use them on the go. They’re great at grandma’s house, at the park or whenever you’re traveling and need a safe place for your baby to sleep.

Top 3 Best Co-Sleeper Reviews

1. DockATot Portable Crib and Bassinet

DockATot makes one of the best co-sleepers for parents who want baby to sleep directly on the mattress with them.

When you’re not using it at night, baby can rest in it as a lounger or enjoy a bit of tummy time when he or she is old enough.

We were pleased with the number of safety certifications that it has achieved, which is probably why it has such a high price tag. Many Swedish baby products do cost more, but the quality is impeccable!

You can use this pad from 0-8 months (or from 5 to 22 pounds), which is much better than some of the other pads out there since they’re only good for the first few months.

If you want to sleep with your baby directly on your mattress, then this is the top choice for most parents.

2. Arm’s Reach Concepts Clear-Vue Cocoa/Fern

If you prefer that baby have his or her space to sleep in yet you would like them within arm’s reach; then this product is perfect. That’s probably why the manufacturer chose the name “Arm’s Reach!”

Unlike the previous pad, this co-sleeper bassinet is appropriate for babies 5 months and older (or if they can push themselves up on their hands and knees). While this won’t due for a newborn, it is great for the next phase of your co-sleeping experience!

There are built-in leg extensions so you can adjust the height of the bassinet to be even with the top of your mattress. Many people want to know what is the tallest height setting, which we were able to find on the manufacturer’s website easily.

The minimum height it can reach is a mattress that sits 24 inches off the ground, and the highest it can reach is a mattress that sits 30 inches off the ground. It is adjustable in 2-inch increments, and you should make sure that there is no more than a ½-inch gap between the sleeper and the bed.

As a bonus, you also get some extra storage space below! It was our favorite bassinet style co-sleeper out of all of them.

3. Snuggle Me Organic Co-Sleeping Baby Bed

The Snuggle Me Organic pad is a bit more affordable than DockATot, and while it doesn’t have quite as many safety certifications, it is CPSIA regulated and GOTS certified organic. The shell is made of organic cotton, and they provide you with a removable organic cotton cover. It comes in five other colors, too!

You can use this type of pad for babies 0-6 months, and while we did have high praises for the DockATot, we admit that this is probably the one that most parents will opt for. It is more affordable, and babies find it to be extremely comfortable. They designed it to fit like a sling, which “hugs” your baby when you lie he or she down in it.

Not all parents require a pad like this. If you just want a place to rest your baby now and then, you can opt for products like numbers 6, 7, or 8 on our list since they are much more affordable.

For on-bed sleeping, however, this was one of our top picks!
