Things to Consider

As you search for the perfect diaper bag, remember to consider the following before you make your final selection:

  • Where You Live And How You Travel. If you live in a big city where you rely on public transportation, you most likely don’t want to haul around a heavy, bulky diaper bag. Opt for something slim, light, and don’t weigh it down with a ton of supplies. Stick with the essentials!

If you drive your own car or find that you won’t need to carry the diaper bag very often, then find something that will hook on your stroller or that you can wear as a backpack.

Parents who take their little ones to theme parks or on excursions are especially fond of backpack diaper bags. When a stroller isn’t available and when you don’t want to put all of the weight on one shoulder, a backpack is a great option.

  • Style. For many, style is just as important as functionality.

If you do prefer something stylish and in-vogue, there are definitely a few functional features that you shouldn’t give up by opting for the cuter bag:

    • Insulated Pouches. For wet wipes, bottles or anything else that might be damp.
    • Pockets. Having a way to separate things within the bag is important so that you can keep it organized!
    • Stain-resistant. Find a material that is durable and easy to clean.
    • Inserts. These are handy little pouches that you place in your diaper bag to keep everything neatly divided.

Top 5 Best Diaper Bags Reviews

1. Universal Stroller Organizer By Ethan & Emma

Convenience, convenience, convenience. Something that every parent appreciates.

The Universal Stroller Organizer by Ethan & Emma easily attaches to the handlebar of your stroller so you can save the storage space on the stroller for other things (shopping bags, your purse, or extra toys for your little one).

This is a collapsible bag with a zip-off pouch, which is great if you need to change your baby somewhere and leave the stroller parked outside the door. Just pop your diaper essentials in there so you can unzip the pouch and take everything you need with you.

The top of the bag has two insulated drink pockets, which is great to set bottles in or warm thermoses if you bring along water that you use to make their formula. In the middle (between the two drink pockets), you have an extra pocket with a soft-closing top (it’s magnetic: no Velcro or zippers to close it).

The Velcro straps that you use to hang on the stroller are very strong. You can adjust the hanging height, as well, which is great if you don’t want it bumping into your legs as you walk.

This is a great on-the-go diaper bag option. Perfect for those who often use a stroller and need just a few essential diaper supplies right at their fingertips, because sometimes you just don’t need a full-on “bag.”

2. Skip Hop Pronto Diaper Changer Kit

Skip Hop is known for making highly durable diaper bags and is a favorite of many parents.

This is a slim, portable diaper changing kit that lets you pack in the most important items you’ll need as you’re on-the-go.

We find that many parents prefer a pouch that detaches from the main bag with the essentials for the actual change, so kits like these have become very popular. Maybe the main diaper bag contains the feeding supplies and extra clothes, while the actual diaper-changing pouch contains creams, diapers and wipes.

When the kit is open and you’re ready to change your baby, you can rest their head on the soft pillow to keep them comfortable. This also comes with a wipe pouch to put your wipes in (in case you have a bulk case that the pouch won’t hold).

Wipe it clean when you’re done using it! Another great diaper bag for parents who don’t always have a lot of space.

3. Built Go-Go Diaper Tote

If you’re looking for a more traditional diaper bag, look no further than the Built Go-Go. It’s made of neoprene, a type of synthetic rubber that is highly durable (like they use on laptop sleeves), and also has a matching neoprene changing pad that you can throw in the washing machine when it gets dirty. You can wash the entire bag, too!

The neoprene also stands up on its own, which is nice since some of the fabric bags aren’t sturdy enough to do so.

The two exterior bottle pockets will insulate bottles for up to four hours, and you also get a pouch on the front of the bag for extra storage space.

This bag is made of safe materials; it’s comfortable and offers you plenty of room for all of your diaper changing and feeding essentials.

4. Carter’s Zip Fashion Diaper Bag

Don’t let this diaper bag fool you. It may be cute enough to be a purse, but it offers you all the conveniences of a diaper bag.

It has eight pockets, a zip-down removable changing pad, two side pockets for bottles and an accessory pouch that you can store wet clothes in.

The handles are durable and the interior of the bag is spacious. Carry around your baby supplies in style!

5. Diaper Dude Messenger Diaper Bag

This is a great bag for dads (and moms, too!). It wears more like a saddlebag (it has an ergonomic design that you wear across your chest) and looks like a book bag.

In this sleek, handy bag, you get a changing pad, cell phone holder and key rings. You can hold all of your diaper bag essentials – wipes, bottles, bibs, food, toys, etc. – and it comes in 31 different colors. Do you want to match it to your favorite sports team or you prefer a camouflage look? No problem!

An awesome bag for dads.

The best diaper bags always value functionality and convenience. Refer to our guide above to find some great looking bags that will offer you both!

What to Pack

Now that you’ve found the perfect diaper bag, it’s time to decide what to put into it!

For Newborn Diaper Bags

  • Diapers. The most obvious item! If you use disposable diapers, you’ll also need some small plastic bags (you can find rolls and hand dispensers for them) so that you can carry them until the nearest garbage pail or throw them away immediately if you’re already near one.

For cloth diapers, make sure you bring along a small, leak-proof wet diaper bag (or a plastic bag).

  • Wipes and Cream. Try to find a travel-size baby wipes container, and be sure to pack a small tube of diaper rash cream.
  • Changing Pad and Disposable Changing Sheets. Most diaper bags come with a changing sheet, but if yours didn’t, make sure you get one. Pack in a few disposable changing pad liners, as well.
  • Feeding Supplies. If you bottle feed, then you’ll need a bottle, formula and a formula dispenser (these divide individual serving sizes into each section of the container. This makes it quick and easy to prepare a bottle.)

If you breast feed, you might want to pack in a cover or blanket (Completely optional! Not all moms like to cover up and that’s OK). You’ll definitely need some burping blankets, disposable nursing pads, and think about having a small tube of cream or that is safe to use on your nipples if you have very dry, cracked skin.

  • Extra Clothes. Because diaper explosions happen. Enough said!
Pack in a hat, as well.
  • Toys, Pacifier. Something to calm baby down if they get fussy is always handy. Bring some small toys that won’t take up too much space in the bag and a few pacifiers if you use them (we suggest a few because one usually ends up on the dirty floor or ground, and you’ll need and extra clean one should this happen).

For All Other Diaper Bags

For all those older than a newborn and up until the toddler years, you will need pretty much everything mentioned on the list above. Think about adding in:

  • Sippy Cup. For those who are or have already transitioned from a bottle/breastfeeding, a sippy cup is always handy!
  • Extra Creams. Keep some sun cream handy! Even when it’s cold outside, you should always protect baby’s skin from the harmful sun rays.

A few other handy things to pack for yourself? Hide some extra cash in the diaper bag for emergencies (maybe you forgot to run to the ATM etc.), and bring an extra pair of car keys (if you happen to lose yours or lock them in the car).
