How Humidifiers Work

If you’re going to choose a humidifier, then we think it’s important for you to know exactly how each kind works.

Here are the most common types and how they work:

  • Ultrasonic. This type of system produces sound waves. These sound waves vibrate the water, which then breaks apart the water molecules. Where do the broken molecules go? Into the air! No heat is needed, making them a bit safer than humidifiers that require heat.
  • Impeller. Here, the water inside the reservoir is flung at a diffuser. This diffuser breaks up the water into smaller droplets and then into the air.

If you choose this kind, be sure to clean out the tank regularly and change the water if it’s been sitting unused for a while.

  • Steam. It’s just like boiling a pot of water to cook the pasta. A steam humidifier heats the water so that it will release the steam into the room. If you use this kind of humidifier, it’s important that it has an automatic shut off to prevent serious safety hazards.

If the steam humidifier you’re interested in doesn’t have this feature, leave it on the shelf and look for something else. Also, you need to make sure that the humidifier is well out of baby’s reach because it does present a burn hazard if they are able to touch it.

Dust

If you use tap water in the humidifier, there’s a higher likelihood that you’ll see what dust particles in the air. What are they?

Once the minerals dry, they break up and…fall to the nearest surface in your home.

This happens most often with ultrasonic and impeller humidifiers, so to reduce the problem, use demineralized water rather than tap water.

Room Size

For larger rooms, make sure the humidifier is capable of effectively covering the entire area. Some of them tell you the square footage that they can handle, so make sure you check into this when reading the label.

Sometimes the smaller humidifiers are best for the nursery (at night when baby sleeps) and the larger ones are best for daily use throughout the home.

We also like the smaller humidifiers because they’re portable, so if you travel with baby it’s nice to have something that doesn’t take up a lot of space in the diaper bag and will keep a hotel room or guest room comfortably humid.

Number 6 above is ideal for travel or smaller sized rooms.

Humidity Level

Good humidifiers will have a digital display that provides you with info about the humidity level in a room, but if you end up selecting one that doesn’t, we highly recommend that you purchase an indoor humidity monitor separately. Heck, even if it does, we’d still get one!

These will help you regulate more closely the temperature and humidity levels in the home, which is not only beneficial to baby but also to everyone else.

Top 5 Best Humidifier for Babies Reviews

1. TaoTronics Advanced Humidifier

Features:

  •  538 Square Feet Range
  • 15 Hour Run Time (on a Full Tank)
  • Built-In Timer
  • LED Display
  • Sleep Mode
  • 360-Degree Mist Control

This is definitely the best baby humidifier (and adult humidifier) on our list. It is so quiet!

It’s easy to adjust the amount of mist that comes out with the 360-degree nozzle, it holds one gallon of water and the humidistat button makes it easy to regulate the humidity percentage in the room.

It is so easy to clean and very reasonably priced. An excellent investment for the entire household.

2. Optimus U-31002 Humidifier

Features:

  • 1.11 Gallon Tank
  • 18 Hour Run Time
  • Adjustable Mist Flow Nozzle
  • Automatic Shut Off

Being slightly lower in cost than the previous one, this humidifier has fewer features but still works great when it comes to adding humidity to the home. It runs quietly and doesn’t require any filter replacements since the permanent filter only needs to be rinsed off.

We didn’t find the actual square footage that it covers, however from our experience, it seemed to work best in a smaller to medium-sized room.

A great find for the price if you don’t need one with all the bells and whistles!

3. Honeywell HCM-350 Humidifier

Features:

  • 2-Gallon Tank
  • 24 Hour Run Time
  • Antimicrobial Filter
  • Best for Medium-Sized Rooms

This filter is a little different because it uses UV technology to help kill germs and bacteria before the vapor is sent into the air. It uses a wicking filtration system as opposed to the ultrasonic, so it will be a tad nosier than the ultrasonic but not by much.

It does require a replacement filter (you’ll have to purchase the Honeywell brand, and they tell you the model number you’ll need).

If you’re looking for a way to sanitize your home and achieve optimal humidity level for baby, this is an excellent unit.

4. Crane Adorable Humidifier

Features:

  • 24-Hour Run Time
  • 2.1 Gallon Tank
  • Auto Shut Off

Some love the Crane humidifiers and others don’t seem to have much luck with them. They’re quite and we do like the auto shut off feature, however we find them to be best for occasional use. If you need something that you want to leave running for the majority of the day, we recommend that you opt for the Honeywell or TaoTronics models.

They definitely win in the cuteness category!

5. cAir-O-Swiss AOS 7147 Humidifier

Features:

  • 650 Square Feet Range
  • Up to 8 Hours Run Time
  • Automatic Humidity Regulator
  • Sleep Mode
  • Warm or Cool Mist Modes

This humidifier is similar to our number one choice above (TaoTronics) but has a few extra features that we like. You can adjust the mist temperature (cool or warm) and it has a built-in demineralization filter. The built-in hydrostat allows you to select the humidity level and it will turn on or shut off in order to maintain the selected level. It also has a mist output regulator and you can even turn the mist output nozzle in different directions.

The only reason we don’t consider it the best humidifier for baby is the price and lower run time. You can find similar models at more affordable prices and that run all day, but we do realize that this is a dependable, well-constructed product.
